Product Review: Audioengine H6

Love old-school audio but don’t want to miss out on any type of modern technology? Audioengine is packing some very interesting features into a classic looking home speaker system.

The Audioengine HD6 Premium Powered Speaker System is a powered speaker pair that’s also a complete audio system. That’s because this home speaker systemhas built-in class A/B monoblock power amplifiers, but also offers two audio inputs, a 24-bit digital optical (SPDIF) input, and much more.

With so many connectivity options, this speaker system can be easily paired with almost any TV, Sonos Connect, and your favorite network music player. You can even hook up that old turntable using one of the set’s preamp inputs.

If you don’t have the room for equipment clutter, the HD6 also features Bluetooth aptX support, so you can stream music right to this home speaker system from any smartphone, tablet, or laptop. That means you can tap into stored music, web radio, and even services such as Tidal, Spotify, Pandora, YouTube, and iTunes.

Of course, the HD6 has a cool retro look, but packs in new woofers with die-cast aluminum frames for extended bass response. Each HD6 speaker also has a new 1-inch tweeter for a wider, more realistic soundstage.

Other features include a frequency response of 50Hz to 22kHz (±1.5dB), upgraded crossover components, and removable magnetic grilles. The system even comes with a remote for easy control.

“As we celebrate our tenth year, HD6 represents a decade’s worth of work,” says Brady Bargenquast, co-founder of Audioengine. “We’ve added some stellar features from our best-selling products, carefully blended in our signature sound, and took a risk with the retro cabinet design—all of which we’re hoping will make HD6 the go-to music system for many years to come.”

Available in black, as well as walnut and cherry wood finishes, the HD6 home speaker system is selling now. Audioengine has priced the product at $749 per pair.
